- In 1953 interested citizens formed the Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS) in order to preserve and display historical artifacts of local interest. Its first president was local businessman Wasson Lawrence, a key fund raiser for the library building at Center and Second Streets. That building was erected around 1956 and included a meeting room designated for historical society programs. In the 1960's a bequest from Mim Hanna Brown funded a specially designed museum room connected to the south wall of the library. Display cases were funded by local organizations and citizens and built by the L.J. Keith Company. In addition to the museums, the WCHS hosts public programs throughout the year with speakers and other presentations. Programs are open to the public and are for all ages.
- The WCHA is a volunteer organization that maintains 501c3 status as a not-for-profit organization. It is funded by membership dues, donations, and local grants. Membership dues are $15 annually or $300 Lifetime (tax-deductible).
- The Wayne County Historical Society and the Fairfield Public Library have a blended heritage of cooperation and mutual support. However, the two institutions are separate entities with separate staff.
